In Venezuela, Carnival is one of the most celebrated days of the year. It marks the start of "lent" in Catholicism or 40 days before "Good Friday". The people celebrate this day through costumes, parades, food, and throwing water balloons at each other. All of the costumes are very bright and people sing, dance, and play music to celebrate this day and the forgiving of their sin. Many of the costumes are designed to represent devils to symbolize their bad doings. This celebration is similar to that of "Fat Tuesday" in New Orleans, which occurs every year the day before "Ash Wednesday."
Carnival was started back in the colonial era. The events of this day have been modernized throughout time, but the traditions are still kept the same. The images below are examples of some of the bright colored costumes.
